Can we talk about how frustrating that performance was........ It seemed like Michelle's mic was off and Patrick Stump kept screaming off key.

I'm pretty sure her mic was on. There was so much going on with that performance, though, that it was super hard to hear her. But I'm almost certain if you listen super duper close, you can pick out her voice in the "I'M ON FIIIIIII-YAH" bit. Unless one of them was sounding like a girl, which is entirely possible. Now Patrick Stump, well, you win that round. Not the best vocal from him at all.

I've got an audio rip (courtesy of your blog, so tyvm!) of it on my computer and I made a few sound adjustments so that I can hear Michelle singing a little bit, but it's down low. I've been a FOB fan for a long time - since around 2007 I believe, and I was in their tumblr fandom for many years. Let's just say that while I love their energy, and the music was a great outlet for the pre-teen angst years, I wasn't in it for the musicality, y'know? Patrick's voice has improved a lot, and I admire the dedication he's put into it, but that song is reaching a little bit on a good day. Michelle could've handled it, especially in that environment. I think one of the main problems was that they did NOT utilize Michelle properly. I mean, just look at the Counting Stars performance the next week - she had actual verses! And they harmonized on the chorus! Amazing that it didn't occur to them the week before. I think Counting Stars was a MUCH better performance, mostly because Ryan Tedder is an AMAZING vocalist.

I mean her mic was definitely on because you can faintly hear her in the background in the "whoah"s and the "i'm on FIYAAAAH"s like you said, but it was so rude of them to force her to sing backup. it was the exact opposite of her performance with onerepublic, which i LOVED.

Isn't that usually what the musical guests do with contestants? I can't remember very many where the contestants were anything more than glorified (sometimes not even that) backup singers. Maybe the one with Sheryl Crow. I can't really remember it right now. I totally agree, though, that they should've given her more to do. It would've made perfect since because I remember hearing that they had just done a show and had one the next day and like, I'm sure Stump could've used a break and we all Michelle could handle the vocal. The performance with OneRepublic was much better and I'd actually totally be into seeing Michelle collaborate with them sometime in the future. Her voice is perfect for their style (or any style).

I totally agree. I've been kind of casually into OneRepublic right before Native dropped, and then I realized I was really into their music, so when I saw that they were going to be on The Voice I was ecstatic. (I won't talk about what I did when I heard they were performing with Michelle...) But definitely, I think it would be awesome to see them collab. Ryan Tedder's a great musician, not just a singer - he did some work for the tv show Smash that I really liked, so I figure they've got that interest in common.

What frustrated me the most was that she used her time doing the Confessional video to rehearse with Fall Out Boy. I felt like MC was excluded for both that artist - guest star performance and the Voice finalists' fun time, as she was almost invisible during that performance and appeared for less than 1 second in the Confessional video.
On the bright side, she did enjoy herself during The Voice After Show when she just sat there doodling the whole time (cute!). Plus, she was so kind while taking about Fall Out Boy and seemed like she did have fun on stage with Fall Out Boy (which consoled my heart a little bit).

I feel like due to the generation that Michelle is from, Fall Out Boy was probably a little bit of an influence on her sound. They would have been really big when she was in college, so I imagine she probably listened to them and might have even been a fan. For that reason I hope she enjoyed the performance, but it was kind of poorly arranged. :/

That performance actually got me mad... Like they had her basically standing in the background barely singing and you could barely hear her. I really like FOB song and I think they should have given Michelle way more parts because her voice is incredible and I think would have made the song a million times better.

It made me mad as well. I feel like she should have had her moment. We could barley hear her! They could of at least turned up her mic..

Does anyone know how that performance even came to be a thing?

I'm glad that other people noticed this as well! I was annoyed throughout the whole performance because I could hardly hear her and I was like "so... when is Michelle going to have a longer part?!?" and she was way off to the side which annoyed me as well, because usually she interacts with the people she's singing with. Patrick was singing as if he was the only one on stage. Which I understand because he's the lead singer and all.. but idk it felt more like a performance with Michelle as a backup vocalist rather than like a duet or a performance together. But yes, I agree with MichelleShamWow, it did make me feel better when she said that she had fun and that they reminded her of her band a bit as long as she's happy.

Yea I was annoyed too.
I also wish she could have performed with Christina. She's said before she's a big fan. I'm sure she would have been thrilled. (And Christina would have enjoyed the performance more than the one she did with Pitt Bull..)

AGREE! I have watched the performance on TV and it was not really impressive, compared to the rest of her performances. The video on Youtube has many negative comments and it hurts, you know.

I've read the comments and some were really nasty. I was enraged but it's all in the past now, hehe

I have watched it on TV too and I agree that MC's potential was not maximized. Still, she's the best. )
